Will it or Won't it? Mazda RX-9 Rumored for October Debut

Mazda is still staying quiet on whether the RX-Vision Concept is heading to production in the form of the ‘RX-9.’

There have been so many rumors about a Mazda RX-8 successor since the RX-Vision Concept debuted in 2015 that by now, we’re not even sure what to think about the project. The Japanese automaker claimed it will build it if there’s demand, and then it dropped hints that the a new rotary engine is in development, suggesting it will be used on a possible RX-9 model. But then in an interview in December 2016, Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai confirmed that the company is not working on a new sports car that’s larger than the Mazda MX-5.

Now, reports from several Asian media outlets suggest the Mazda RX-9 is making its debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show this October. It wouldn’t be the first time, however, that rumors surface of a car debut that never comes to fruition. We’re a bit skeptical that we will see it at the show considering Kogai’s statements late last year. But it wouldn’t be the first time an automaker has gone against its word and we hope that’s the case.
