The Tesla Model S is About to Get More Expensive

The current entry-level Tesla Model S 60 and 60D are getting discontinued.

The American automaker has begun sending out emails to inform potential buyers that the change is coming. The email states April 16, 2017 will be the final day a person can order the Tesla Model S 60 and 60D, which are the cheapest models available with a starting price of $69,200 including destination. The thing is, both the 60 and 60D models were actually equipped with 75-kWh batteries, but they were software locked to 60 kWh. Owners are able to unlock the remaining 15 kWh by purchasing an over-the-air update if they want more capacity.

The automaker says it’s discontinuing the 60 and 60D models because most customers eventually ended up getting the 75-kWh upgrade and it wants to simplify the ordering process.

It also makes sense with the upcoming addition of the Tesla Model 3 that the Model S will become more expensive. It leaves room for higher-end Model 3 variants to not compete with the entry-level Model S.

If Tesla doesn’t introduce a new version of the Model S after April 16, buyers will have a total of five options to choose from on the Model S.
