Report: VW I.D. Hatch EV Not Coming to America

Volkswagen “probably” won’t send the I.D. hatchback our way, instead limiting it to European markets, according to a report from .

Rather than the hatch, VW’s electric experiment will begin with the I.D. Crozz in America. The Crozz debuted in Shanghai earlier this year and is an attractive crossover/coupe concept.

America is to be the first market where the I.D. Crozz launches, in 2020 or 2021.

This is supported by an internal document that leaked in June, showing the schedule for VW’s I.D. range and their markets.

Unfortunately, market forces are also working against an electric hatchback in America. This market loves SUVs and Crossovers, and electric hatchbacks are already well-represented.

It’s not all bad news for an electric hatchback this side of the Atlantic, though. The e-Golf still has a future ahead of it and at a Rallycross event in July, VW said that it would be a good fit for an electric Rallycross series.

That suggests that the e-Golf will be around for a couple more years, over the course of which it will doubtless benefit from I.D.-related improvements.

The Crozz will have a 300-mile range and will sit on the electric-only MEB platform.
