Performance Tesla Model 3 Coming in Mid 2018

Prospective buyers of the Tesla Model 3 can expect a performance version of the electric compact sedan to arrive in mid-2018, Elon Musk has revealed in a tweet.

Musk said previously that the initial run of Model 3s would be simplified, base model versions of the car so as to not complicate the assembly process early on in the production cycle. Customers are able to pick from just two options from launch: the color of the exterior and the wheels. More options, such as all-wheel drive and interior color options, will be rolled out as Tesla figures out how to streamline the production process.

It’s likely that the performance Model 3 will feature a similar powertrain as hot versions of the Model S. That means a high kilowatt battery pack will likely be present, along with an electric motor on each axle. We doubt it will eclipse the performance of the Model S P100D and its world-famous 2.2s 0-60 mph time as the Model 3 is cheaper than the Model S, but you can be sure it will be plenty fast.

The Model 3 is currently offered with either a 60 or 75 kWh battery pack. The 60 kWh version accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 130 mph, while the 75 kWh version does the same dance in 5.1 seconds and can hit a top speed of 140 mph.
