Mercedes Project One Won’t be Called Project One – And You Still Can’t Have One

After building an astonishing amount of hype surrounding the Project One, Mercedes has decided it won’t be called the Project One after all.

Mercedes says the car unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this week is still officially a concept, it’s not quite ready for homologation so it doesn’t get a proper name yet. The entire 275-car run has been spoken for already, and according to the first cars will get bolted together in 2019–however, Mercedes hasn’t made it clear how long each car will take to build.

There won’t be a roadster or a more hardcore version, what you see is what you get, a narrowly focused, Formula 1 derived hypercar. According to AMG boss Tobias Moers, this was always the plan.

“In October 2015 I called Andy Cowell [in charge of AMG’s F1 powertrains] and asked can he think about whether the F1 engine would be capable of road use and meeting emissions. I gave him a month. And a month later he called back and said yes.”

Shortly after that, a small team started work on what would eventually become the Project One.
