Mercedes-AMG Set to Introduce Hybrid Powertrain with New CLS

Mercedes will introduce a new hybrid powertrain on the next CLS AMG sedan.

According to , the new powertrain will appear in the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS in March 2018. It will consist of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine paired to an electric motor, with the engine making around 430 horsepower and the electric motor bringing another 65 hp into the equation.

The new powertrain will see Mercedes use a new ’53’ nameplate for its lesser AMG models, replacing the ’43’ nomenclature currently used. Combined, the system should be noticeably more powerful than what’s currently offered in the 43 models, like the E43’s 396 hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, for example.

After debuting in the new CLS, the system will trickle down throughout Mercedes’ range, appearing on the E-Class coupe and cabriolet models, as well as the S-Class. It’s unclear when it will find its way to the C-Class, but  says it’s likely a case of when, and not if.

Given how AMG handles its models, it won’t be a surprise if the 53 nameplate and hybrid powertrain ends up across its entire lineup.

The company is putting a focus in electrification, with Mercedes-Benz currently looking to launch its EQ series of electric vehicles. Mercedes-AMG also showed off a hybrid powertrain in the recent four-door GT Concept – though it’s not clear if the 805 horsepower system will be available in the car from launch.
