Hyundai has detailed its plan to bring more eco-friendly vehicles to market by 2020, which will be spearheaded by the arrival of the Hyundai Kona EV in 2018.
The plan, which was detailed yesterday as part of the unveiling of Hyundai’s new fuel cell SUV, will see Hyundai and Kia bring 31 eco-friendly vehicles to market by 2020. The Korean automaker describes it as a “multi-pronged” approach that will see it invest in hybrids, EVs and fuel cell vehicles. The first vehicle to arrive as part of this push will be an EV version of the Kona compact SUV, which will boast an estimated range of 242 miles when it goes on sale in the first half of 2018.
The second vehicle detailed by Hyundai, though probably not the second car to arrive as part of the plan, is a luxurious Genesis-branded EV sedan that is to arrive in 2021. After the arrival of that car, Hyundai will roll out a long-range EV with up to 310 miles of range, however it’s not clear if it will fall under the Hyundai or Genesis banner. The plan will also see Hyundai develop its first dedicated electric car platform, which will allow it to produce numerous different EV models.

Furthermore, Hyundai plans to “strengthen its global leadership in hydrogen fuel cell technology,” by “enhancing research and development efforts to boost FCEV performance and durability, while also making the technology smaller and cheaper so that it can be applied to smaller sedans.” In addition to its hydrogen fuel cell SUV and making fuel cells viable for use in small cars, the automaker will also unveil a new hydrogen powered bus in the fourth-quarter of this year.
