GM Recall Might Expand Under NHTSA Probe

Nearly 5,000 vehicles could be added to a recall General Motors announced in May. 

The initial campaign centered around more than 38,000 GM cars equipped with the automaker’s eAssist hybrid system. After discovering that the cars, which fall under 2012 and 2013 model years could stall and catch fire because of a defective generator control module. The affected vehicles are the Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Buick LaCrosse and Buick Regal sedans.

Unsold vehicles weren’t included in the original recall and General Motors said it would repair the affected units before they were sold. That promise is being questioned after one of the tested vehicles caught fire.

Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the fires raise questions about whether or not the recall should be expanded from the original 38,197 to almost 43,000 units.
