The 2019 Subaru Ascent made its debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show last week, marking the arrival of the largest Subaru badged product in the company’s 64-year history.
The Ascent is a three-row, mid-size SUV aimed squarely at American families. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine, which makes 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a CVT automatic transmission and Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. The automaker says it can travel up to 500 miles on a full tank and is also capable of towing up to 5,000 lbs. There’s also a ton of active and passive safety features, onboard wi-fi, two available infotainment systems, 19 cupholders and 8 USB ports.

We scoured our different social media pages, as well as our comment section, for reader’s opinions on the new Ascent. It seemed as though the public was pretty split on the matter. Some proclaimed the Ascent to be everything they look for in a vehicle at a relatively affordable asking price, while others were turned off by the forgettable styling or CVT transmission. There were also some who wanted a bigger engine than the turbo 2.4-liter, but it seems no matter what engine a car has, there’s always someone who wants a bigger, more powerful option, so that was to be expected. In our office, someone said it can “tow things and hold all your stuff, so it might actually be able to compete with large American SUVs, especially if the fuel economy is good and the price stays low.”
