Now that the 2018 Volvo XC60 is getting ready to head to dealerships, the automaker is working on completing the smaller XC40.
Spy photographers have managed to snap the first photos of the new crossover’s interior, featuring a Sensus infotainment center screen while the cabin appears to have very few buttons and switches. Volvo previewed the upcoming XC40 with the 40.1 Concept, which featured an interesting design with the rear window sporting a trapezoidal shape. When spy photographers first caught the XC40 testing, it was difficult to tell whether that design will make it to production with all the excess camouflage, but the interior photos suggest it will.
Although the exterior is still covered, the interior photos reveal angular glass in the rear, as well as a seam that suggests there will be a large angular door opening. You can expect the exterior design to closely resemble the XC60, which looks similar to the larger XC90.

The 2018 Volvo XC40 will ride on the Swedish automaker’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that is designed specifically for compact cars. Volvo has confirmed it will take advantage of Twin Engine plug-in hybrid technology, so expect to see a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline unit as well as a four-cylinder diesel offering.
Look for the new Volvo XC40 to make its debut later this year before it goes on sale in 2018.
