Uber Pulls Self-Driving Cars From the Streets After Crash

Uber has temporarily stopped its self-driving cars from operating after a crash involving one of its self-driving Volvo XC90s. 

The accident was not a fault of the XC90, which was hit by another driver who did not yield at a left turn to the Volvo. No customers were in the vehicle at the time, though there was a driver in the front seat. The XC90 was in self-driving mode when the accident happened and it isn’t clear if the driver tried to intervene.

All of Uber’s self-driving vehicle have a human driver behind the wheel at all times, ready to take over control if necessary.

Uber has pulled all of its self-driving cars from the roads in Arizona, where the accident took place, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the self-driving project first began at the end of February. The company is now reviewing the incident to discover the details.

Uber has come under fire in recent months over allegations of harassment and intellectual property theft at the company, causing many executives to leave, including president Jeff Jones.
