BMW continues to make its lineup more and more confusing.
A few years back, the German automaker decided to change its nomenclature to simplify how its lineup is named. At the time, odd-numbered Series were meant to be sedans, while even-numbered Series would be coupes. But that started going out the window when the 4 Series Gran Coupe and 6 Series Gran Coupe were introduced. Now it seems like all that doesn’t matter, as the 5 Series Gran Turismo has become the 6 Series Gran Turismo.
Sporting a more aggressive design than the outgoing model, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo will make its public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September before heading to dealerships in November.
One of the biggest changes to the model, besides its name, is its weight. BMW says the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steel grades for body and chassis components has shaved an average of around 331 pounds (150 kilograms) from the car’s weight. While the model is about 3.4 inches longer (87 millimeters), the car’s width remains unchanged at 74.88 inches (1,902 mm). Its height has been reduced by 0.83 inch (21 mm), giving it a lower overall profile.

The model will launch with a variety of engines, with the 630i Gran Turismo getting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 258 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The more powerful 640i Gran Turismo gets a familiar 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a diesel 630d model with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine providing 265 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. All engines are paired to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive is available on the 640i and 630d.
Inside the cabin, BMW says the head-up display now has a 70 percent larger projection surface. In addition, a large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment center can be found in the center stack. The rear receives electrically-adjustable comfort seats and there’s added luxury for the driver with a comfort seat featuring eight massage programs.
Expect more details on the U.S.-spec BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo later this year.
