Tesla's Gigafactory is Already Making A Mind Boggling Amount of Batteries

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims the Gigafactory produces more batteries than any other factory in the world.

According to two sources speaking to , Musk shared the news during a conference call hosted by Goldman Sachs for bondholders, following the company’s bond issuance. Battery cell production for Tesla’s Powerwall and Powerpack started at the Gigafactory in January, while production of Model 3 battery cells began in June. Although Musk didn’t reveal the exact figure of how many batteries are currently being produced, he did say it was higher than any other factory in the world.

notes some of the largest battery factories in the world currently produce around 4 GWh of lithium-ion batteries annually, which suggests Tesla’s Gigafactory is capable of producing at least that much.

There’s still a lot of construction to be done at the first Gigafactory site, as only about 30 percent of it has been completed. Still, the current structure is about 1.9-million square feet with several levels, allowing the factory to have about 4.9-million square feet of operational space.

Musk’s ultimate goal with the Gigafactory is to produce more batteries at one site than the entire industry combined.
