Shelby Unveils Widebody Super Snake Concept

Super Snake is a name synonymous with only the most superlatively speedy Ford Mustangs and this one is no exception with Shelby American treating us to the first official take on a widebody S550 Mustang.

Thanks to a wider track, upgraded suspension, brakes, tires and wheels, Shelby American’s new Widebody Concept diverges from the Super Snake’s normal affinity for gobbling up straight lines and gains new acumen as an apex eater.

Notably, the rear track grows wider by 4 inches, while the front gains 2.5 inches. Other chassis upgrades include a fully adjustable coil-over suspension system, a new set of rear lower control arms, plus stronger spindles and hubs.

Under the hood, the Super Snake sports a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 pulled from the popular 50th Anniversary Shelby Super Snake, with 750 horsepower on tap it has enough balls to bury just about anything else Detroit has to offer.

The brakes were swapped for four-piston Brembo calipers which bite 16-inch front rotors and 14-inchers in the back. Everything rides on a set of wider wheels and tires to get the Mustang’s new found power down.

“Adding approximately four inches to the car’s rear track and two and a half to the front, opened up new opportunities to maximize handling,” said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations and Chief Test Driver.

“The fully adjustable coil over suspension and the enormous Brembo braking system, along with wider wheels and tires significantly change the car’s driving dynamics. This provides more grip for later braking and earlier acceleration out of corners. It will deliver more communication to the driver and better absorb track imperfections.”

Visually, the Mustang’s new widebody kit is integrated perfectly with the stock sheet metal, Shelby also massaged the rear wing, diffuser, side skirts and front splitter.

Should the wide body concept head into production, Shelby plans to make it available worldwide as an official vehicle under the Shelby Registry.
