A BMW X7 concept will debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show next month with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, according to a new report.
It has long been known that BMW has a large three-row SUV in the works that will bear the X7 badge, but rumors that a hydrogen-powered concept will arrive are all-new. If the intel is to be believed, the concept will spawn a production version of the X7 with a hydrogen system.
This isn’t the first time BMW has expressed interest in hydrogen tech. It produced a hydrogen powered version of the E65/E66 generation BMW 7-Series, however the model was limited to just 100 units. It also showed off a hydrogen-powered version of its i8 sports car a couple of years ago, but the vehicle was only for research purposes and was never intended to go into production.

The X7 concept will be succeeded by a production version of the large SUV, which should arrive sometime in early or mid-2018. It will of course be offered with conventional gasoline and diesel engines from launch, while a plug-in hybrid version may also arrive with a version of the 740e’s powertrain. The X7 will be built at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, which is currently tasked with building the X3, X5 and X6.
