Redesigned 2017 Mazda CX-5 Aces its Crash Tests

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Redesigned for the 2017 model year, the crossover earned good ratings on all five of the Institute’s crashworthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 comes with standard front crash prevention that earns an advanced rating, while an optional higher-speed system earns a superior rating. IIHS says both versions avoided a collision in the 12-mph IIHS track test, and the optional system avoided a collision at 25 mph.

Headlights on the CX-5 Grand Touring and Sport models earned an acceptable rating. The Touring trim comes with marginal-rated headlights.

In order to qualify for a 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must have good crashworthiness ratings across the board, along with an available front crash prevention system with an advanced or superior rating. In order to get to receive the Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must also have good or acceptable headlights.
