Production of the Ram Heavy Duty to Move From Mexico to Michigan

The next-generation Ram Heavy Duty will enter production at Fiat Chrysler’s Warren, Michigan plant in 2020, Fiat Chrysler has announced.

The automaker will invest $1 billion in order to move production of the heavy-duty pickup from Saltillo, Mexico to the freshly retooled Michigan site. It will add 2,500 jobs to the Detroit suburb when the plant overhaul is complete in 2020.

“It is only proper that our employees share in the savings generated by tax reform and that we openly acknowledge the resulting improvement in the U.S. business environment by investing in our industrial footprint accordingly,” CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a prepared statement.

FCA also announced over 60,000 of its US employees would be receiving $2,500 bonuses, another result of the tax reform bill passed by the Trump administration late last year.

“These announcements reflect our ongoing commitment to our U.S. manufacturing footprint and the dedicated employees who have contributed to FCA’s success,” Marchionne said.

The Italian-American automaker will debut its all-new 2019 Ram pickup truck at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week. The pickup will arrive with an entirely new exterior and interior design and is expected to incorporate aluminum in its construction to save weight, although the body won’t be aluminum. Updated powertrain options should be on the table as well.
