CARS.COM — Volkswagen has confirmed that it has discontinued its Touareg mid-size SUV in the U.S. and that the 2017 model year is its last. A Volkswagen spokeswoman said the brand is focused on its two new SUVs: the three-row Atlas, which is all-new, and the compact Tiguan, which has been redesigned.

First offered as a 2004 model, the Touareg debuted as an upscale, off-road-capable alternative to mainstream SUVs of the day but with a price tag that put it in competition with SUVs from luxury brands — particularly uplevel versions powered by an available gas V-8 or turbo-diesel V-10 engine. The Touareg was last redesigned for the 2011 model year.
The new Atlas and redesigned Tiguan, by comparison, have been designed — and priced — to take on the most popular models in their respective segments.
You can still snag a new Touareg before the SUV is gone for good; there are currently about 1,500 for sale on Cars.com.
