Next Mercedes CLA To Be Offered In Two AMG Flavors

The next-generation of Mercedes-AMG compact cars will be offered in two variants to appeal to a wider range of consumers, the automaker has confirmed.

Mercedes has already taken a two-tier strategy with the AMG versions of its larger cars. The C-Class, for example, is offered in C43 AMG form with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 or in C63 AMG form with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8.

The next-generation A-Class will be the first new compact car from Mercedes to adopt this two-tiered pricing and performance structure. The A45 AMG nameplate is to return and will be joined by a less powerful, less expensive AMG performance model. The same will be true for the CLA45 sedan and GLA45 compact crossover.

“The compact car family is going to be extended,” AMG Chairman Tobias Moers confirmed to Autoblog in a recent interview. “We will complement our successful ’45’ models with new performance versions, with two versions, like we do with larger cars.”

Mercedes gave us a preview of its next-generation of performance compact cars when it debuted the Concept A sedan at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show in April. Like the current C-Class and E-Class, the concept has done away with creases and seams, replacing them with svelte, smoothed over surfaces. The four-door signals the arrival of the next CLA45 AMG sedan, but it also intended to preview the styling of all future compact cars from Mercedes.
