Next-Gen BMW 3 Series Growing, Losing Weight and Going Hybrid

Now that the redesigned BMW 5 and 7 Series models have launched, focus is being put on the next-generation 3 Series.

Spy photographers have already caught the next-generation sedan testing, but details on changes have been scarce. Now, German publication reports the new 3 Series will be 2.3 inches (6 cm) longer than the current model, while its wheelbase is about 0.7 inches (2 cm) longer. What we do know for sure is the BMW 3 Series will ride on the German automaker’s CLAR platform, which means it will be lighter.  reports it will shed around 88 pounds (40 kilograms).

But perhaps most interesting is the next-generation BMW M3 will reportedly have a mild hybrid system with an electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission. Along with a 48-volt electrical system, power output is expected to be around 453 horsepower.

The interior is expected to lose a few buttons to simplify and streamline the design, while higher-end models will benefit from a digital instrument cluster. As has been the case for years now, there will be a plethora of engine options for the 3 Series including three-, four-, and six-cylinder options, along with a plug-in hybrid variant.
