Newer Tesla Model S Finally Gets Better Autopilot

Newer Tesla Model S vehicles finally have similar features as the first-generation Autopilot hardware.

When Tesla first announced Hardware 2.0 (HW2), it made it clear that not all the same features would be available right away. With the new 8.1 update rolling out, those vehicles are being brought up to date and new owners can finally take advantage of all the same safety features found in older Model S vehicles, reports Electrek. The max speed for Autosteer is now capped at 80 mph, up from the previous cap of 55 mph. The software update also includes lane departure warning.

The American automaker said the Model S will require calibration before Autosteer can be used at driving speeds greater than 55 mph. The calibration takes place automatically over several days of driving on well-marked highways.

HW2 owners also can now use the Summon feature, which allows them to move their vehicle in and out of a parking space or garage without having to get into the car. Auto Lane Change is also being released, allowing the driver to start a lane change by just using the turn signal while Autosteer is activated.
