Production for a new, pure electric MINI model is scheduled for 2019.
MINI will unveil a concept car previewing the upcoming all-electric model at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will be based on the three-door MINI and will be built alongside the rest of the company’s lineup in Cowley, Oxfordshire in the U.K. Expect it to feature an electric powertrain made by BMW’s e-mobility factories in Bavaria, where the i3’s drivetrain is manufactured. MINI should be targeting an all-electric range around 250 miles.

Compared to other automakers, MINI may be considered late to the all-electric party. But the company said it’s arriving in 2019 because that’s when the “next step in battery technology” will make the model viable in the market. The British automaker plans on electrifying more models in its lineup, and started the process earlier this year when it launched the Countryman plug-in hybrid.
It’s all part of a strategy the BMW Group outlined in its Strategy Number One Next paper, which aims to sell up to half-a-million electric cars per year by 2025.
