Michelin Imagines the Tire of the Future

Michelin has introduced a concept tire called Vision.

Making its debut at Movin’On 2017, the tire maker says the Vision is airless, connected, rechargeable, customizable, and organic. As both a wheel and tire, the Vision is developed from bio-sourced, biodegradable materials and was created using 3D printing. Michelin claims it’s the world’s first tire that recharges, and through the use of 3D printing, it is possible to use just the right amount of rubber on the tire, extending its life depending on its needs.

Most interesting is how the tire concept does away with air, relying on its interior architecture to support the vehicle. As a result, the Vision tire can’t explode or blow out. And perhaps sounding more like science-fiction than reality – the connected tire is equipped with sensors that provide real time information about its condition.

Michelin believes Vision is a “realistic dream,” but we wouldn’t expect to see any 3D-printed tires being offered on the market anytime soon.
