Mercedes and Smart are previewing the future in Frankfurt.
Along with unveiling the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar, the luxury German automaker is showing off its electrified projects. The Concept EQA previews an all-electric compact that is aiming for a 250-mile range when it heads to production in a few years. The stylish electric hatch is powered by a pair of electric motors generating 268 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to go zero-to-60 mph in about five seconds.
Along with the Concept EQA, Mercedes unveiled a GLC F-Cell, which combines plug-in hybrid power with fuel cell technology. The GLC F-Cell should be able to travel up to 271 miles (437 kilometers) on a full tank of hydrogen, while the range is further bumped by about 30 miles (49 km) thanks to a 13.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In total, the GLC F-Cell has a total range of about 301 miles (486 km), but that’s on the generous European cycle. According to Mercedes, the GLC F-Cell has a combined system output of about 197 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Smart is also at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, showing off the Vision EQ ForTwo Concept. The brand looks to be the future of urban mobility, with the electric car concept designed for the purpose of car sharing. The compact car is powered by an electric motor and a 30-kWh lithium-ion battery, and will be capable of driving itself to the nearest charging station when it’s not busy driving people around.
