Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 With New 4.0L V8 Spied Testing

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 will soon be replaced with an all-new model boasting the automaker’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8.

The new GLE 63 was recently spotted testing at the Nurburgring in Germany, signaling an arrival sometime in early 2018. The all-new model will do away with the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 currently employed in the performance SUV, adopting AMG’s new 4.0-liter twin-turbo eight-cylinder instead. The standard version should have about 570 horsepower on tap, while a GLE 63 ‘S’ should be offered as well offering up at least 600 horsepower.

These spy shots give us a good idea of what the next-generation GLE will look like. Prominent features on this AMG version of the crossover include some very wide fender flares, sporty front and rear fascias, black AMG wheels and large brakes. The spaces for AMG’s iconic quad exhaust are occupied by some single outlet tips, unsurprising seeing as the quad-outlets are fake anyways.

Non-AMG versions of the new GLE should adopt a range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder gasoline engines, while European models will probably receive an updated diesel range as well. A plug-in hybrid version of the crossover also seems inevitable.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 should debut sometime in early 2018 before going on sale later in the year.
