McLaren 570S Reportedly Getting a Convertible Model Later this Year

Look for the McLaren 570S Spider to debut in 2017.

reports the British automaker has confirmed the 570S convertible will launch this year and will be powered by the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found in the coupe. No changes to the powertrain are expected, so it should have the same 562 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. It will also likely use a folding hard-top roof like the McLaren 650S Spider so it will weigh a bit more than the coupe. In the case of the 650S, the convertible version weighs about 88 pounds (40 kilograms) more, which means the 570S Spider should be around 2,976 lbs (1,350 kg).

Despite the additional weight, McLaren has managed to make other convertible models have nearly identical performance figures as their coupe counterparts. So look for the 570S Spider to match the 3.2-second zero-to-60 time and 205-mph top speed.

And since the convertible model typically costs quite a bit more than the coupe, don’t expect to see a 540C Spider anytime soon. “With the 540C, by the time you add options it can cost the same as a 570S, which is why we only offer it in certain markets,” said McLaren boss Mike Flewitt in an interview with . “And because of that, it doesn’t make sense to do a 540C Spider. There will never be a 540 GT either.”
