The all-new head-up display will debut this spring on the Lincoln Continental.
The American automaker says the new system is exclusive to the company and is the brightest and biggest display in its class. It is also the first manufacturer to use Digital Light Projection (DLP) technology, the same technology found in digital movie theaters. According to Lincoln, DLP allows the display to be visible in more ambient lighting conditions than its competitors, and drivers wearing polarized sunglasses can still see it. The company conducted research and found that other systems may fade or be difficult to view in bright light, but DLP remains clear and bright for optimal viewing.

Lincoln also added an infrared reflective coating on the glass that deflects heat so that the car stays cool in warmer climates. Everything on the head-up display can be controlled by the steering wheel and it’s customizable so drivers can select what they want to be displayed. Placement and brightness can also be configured to help set the ideal viewing position above the steering wheel.
“We’ll be using a DLP chip from Texas Instruments, while many other automakers use a different technology that doesn’t get quite as bright,” says Anthony King, product design engineer for The Lincoln Motor Company. “That’s what sets us apart.”
