Lighter, More Powerful McLaren 720S Confirmed

It’s barely been a week since McLaren’s newest supercar debuted and there’s already talks of a hotter version.

The McLaren 720S was officially unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, where  took the opportunity to ask CEO Mike Flewitt if a Long Tail (LT) version was under consideration. To the publication’s surprise, Flewitt actually gave an answer rather than the usual statement of not responding in regards to future products.

“The 675LT was a huge success,” he said. “I was delighted from a market perspective, but also internally because we love that car. We have a huge enthusiasm for it. We’ll certainly repeat Long Tail, and now that the LT brand is established, if we announce an LT derivative of a car, then everyone will know what to expect: that it will be lighter, the chassis dynamics will be way sharper, and it will have more power. We’ll definitely repeat that in models going forward.”

It’s probably less of a surprise that a McLaren 720S LT is in the pipeline, especially considering other exotic automakers are focusing on lighter, more hardcore versions like the Lamborghini Huracan Performante that set a record at the Nurburgring. Ferrari is also working on a track-oriented version of the 488.

The company is also considering LT variants for other existing Sport Series models, although it might not carry the LT name. “I think that a lighter, faster Sports Series has great appeal, although whether it would be an LT or not is another question. But yes, I’m sure there would be an appetite for it.”

One thing is for sure, McLaren enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.
