Lamborghini Urus Debuts as the Fastest SUV in the World

After some technical difficulties, the Lamborghini Urus SUV bowed in Italy.

The Italian automaker’s special event didn’t go as well as planned, with technical difficulties showing up that caused a break right before the car took to the stage. But that didn’t stop the Urus SUV from making a grand entrance, with Lamborghini confirming it’s the fastest SUV in the world with a 190-mph (305 km/h) top speed. The SUV also sprints from zero-to-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds, which is comparable to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk’s zero-to-60 time of 3.5 seconds.

Lamborghini reiterated much of what it has been teasing leading up to the SUV’s debut, which is the Urus is designed to tackle all sorts of road conditions, whether it is used in the city or driving on gravel like a rally car, or tackling sand dunes. In order to make it versatile enough to take on all terrain types, the Urus is Lamborghini’s first turbocharged model in its history.

Under the hood is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 650 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque that is actually borrowed from Audi. The powerplant is paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with four-wheel drive. There is also active torque vectoring from the front to back axles and between the rear tires, thanks to center and rear differentials. Torque is split 40/60 to the front/rear axle as standard, but a dynamic maximum torque of 70 percent can be sent to the front, or 87 percent to the rear.

Carbon ceramic brakes will come standard and the rotors are the largest on any production car, measuring 17.3 inches up front (440mm) and nearly 14.6 inches in the rear (370mm). Those front rotors are accompanied by 10-piston calipers, while the rear gets four-piston units.

Complementing those huge brakes are large wheels with 21-inch rollers coming standard. Buyers can however, opt for even bigger 22- or 23-inch wheels, paired to specially-developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.

More impressive, Lamborghini claims the Urus has a curb weight under 4,850 pounds (2,200 kilograms), making it the SUV with the best power-to-weight ratio.

In the U.S., the Lamborghini Urus will be priced from $200,000 and deliveries will begin in spring 2018.

“The Lamborghini Urus is a visionary approach based on the infusion of Lamborghini DNA into the most versatile vehicle, the SUV. The Urus elevates the SUV to a level not previously possible, the Super SUV. It is a true Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, driving dynamics and emotion as well as drivable every day in a range of environments,” says Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The Urus fits perfectly within the Lamborghini family as a high performance car. It is the culmination of intensive development and passionate skill to create a new breed of bull: a Super SUV that transcends the boundaries of expectations and opens the door to new possibilities, for both our brand and our customers.”
