Shelby American reminded everyone why Caroll was King of the Mustang at SEMA this year.
From its shop on the outskirts of Las Vegas, Shelby rolled a pair of highly modified Mustangs into the 2017 SEMA show.
The first is the Super Snake Wide Body Concept, based on the facelifted 2018 Mustang, Shelby says the Widebody Concept previews a production model that will become available shortly.
Shelby gave it a gargantuan widebody kit that stretches the front fenders 2.5 inches, and the rears an obscene 4 inches. There’s also a heavily sculpted front fascia that features a double splitter and a new grille. Rounding out the look is a custom hood with twin heat extractors, a fat new pair of shoes, new rocker panels, and a tasteful lip spoiler.
The second car is so obscene its banned from regular roadways. It’s called the Shelby 1000 — can you guess why?
Available for all S550 Mustang GTs, pre-facelift or not, Shelby swaps out the stock 5.0-liter V8 in favor of the GT350’s 5.2-liter V8. It’s missing Ford’s special 180-degree flat plane crankshaft, but don’t lament, because the Shelby people tacked on a 4.5-liter Whipple supercharger!

A blower forcing 4,500-cc of extra air into the cylinders is capable of upping output to a brutal 1,000-horsepower. In order to survive, Shelby also gave it a new high-flow fuel system, intercooler, manual transmission, long tube exhaust, ECU, and mapping. Shelby admits emissions certification wasn’t even considered, meaning those 1,000 horsies are limited to closed courses only.
As a result, the company went all out on cornering capability, giving the car a wider track, fully adjustable coil-overs, Penske dampers, upgraded spindles, hubs, and studs, plus a rather large set of Brembo brakes hidden by 10-inch thick front tires, and 12-inch rears. Shelby needed to reinforce the Mustang’s frame and revise the entire suspension geometry to cope with the rapid power delivery, along with installing new heavy-duty halfshafts and CV joints from the Ford Performance catalog.
The exterior gets a new fascia designed to maximize cooling, a taller hood to accommodate the blower and extract the extra heat it generates, widened front fenders and quarter panels, aero rocker panels, rear diffuser, and a baby spoiler. Inside, there’s a 4-point roll bar with harnesses, no rear seat, front buckets wrapped in Katzkin leather, and Shelby brand instrumentation.
Shelby will build just 50 cars per year for the price of $169,995, which doesn’t include the cost of the donor Mustang. The first batch of sales will start in the first quarter of 2018.
