Infiniti Q60 Project Black S Packs F1-Derived Hybrid Tech

Infiniti is showing the world what its performance engineering division is capable of with the new Q60 Project Black S.

This car, which will debut next week at the Geneva Motor Show, is a collaboration between Infiniti and its technical partner, the Renault Sport Formula 1 team. This collaboration is apparent when you look at the powertrain, which uses an F1-inspired kinetic energy recover system and electric motors to help boost output.

In total, Infiniti says power have been improved by about 25 percent, bringing horsepower up to 500 from the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 combined with the hybrid setup.

To increase aerodynamics and decrease weight, Infiniti used carbon fiber for the new front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, along with the massive rear spoiler. Twin titanium exhaust tips are also present, while Infiniti says the exhaust note has been tuned to make this car sound more like its F1 counterpart.

“Infiniti is the premium car manufacturer within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and a technical partner to the Renault Sport Formula One Team, so it is natural that we come together to explore the possibility of bringing innovative high-performance hybrid technology to our customers,” said Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti. “Infiniti has constantly led the way in making innovative new powertrain technology available, and we’re extremely excited by the potential of Project Black S.”

There is no production intent with this project car, although Infiniti says that it will gauge public reaction and that if it is positive enough, this could become something you could purchase.
