Hyundai's Genesis Brand Plotting Compact Crossover

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand is planning to introduce a compact crossover as part of its ongoing product onslaught.

During a recent visit to Hyundai’s research and development center in Korea, journalists were shown a future product plan for Genesis that included a compact crossover in addition to the previously announced GV80 full-size SUV and the GV70 mid-size. The compact crossover, which was referred to in the plan as ‘CUV, won’t arrive until 2021. The GV80 and GV70 are set to go on sale by 2020.

The same product map also revealed an updated version of the G90 full-size sedan and the next-generation G80 sedan would arrive for 2020. The next all-new product from Genesis will be the G70 sport sedan, which will arrive later this year. The brand will also bring a sporty vehicle to market sometime after 2021 – perhaps inspired by the Genesis Vision G Concept it unveiled back in 2015.

Genesis boss Manfred Fitzgerald told in a recent interview that it would like to grow its so far minimal brand awareness by having a complete and wide-reaching product lineup.

“We still have a lack of awareness,” he said. “But additional entries, he promised, will help put Genesis on people’s radar as a legitimate luxury contender.”

“There are still many other white spots on the map. To get substance into your brand, you have to demonstrate the breadth of the brand.”
