Hyundai has revealed its new fuel cell powered SUV ahead of its official debut sometime next year.
The Korean automaker quietly released these images today of a pre-production version of the unnamed SUV. The vehicle, which is “near production ready” according to Hyundai, has been designed from the ground-up as a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and should boast a total range of around 500 miles. It will store hydrogen in three different, equal sized tanks before the element is converted into electricity to power the 160 horsepower engine. Hyundai says the SUV will be nine percent more efficient and 20 percent more powerful than its previous hydrogen vehicle, the Tuscon-based IX35.

“With exceptional efficiency, serene styling, and uncompromised performance, our next generation fuel cell SUV is the true epitome of an eco-friendly vehicle of the future,” said senior vie president of Hyundai’s Eco Technology Center, Lee Ki-sang. “Hyundai Motor will take lead in developing and producing green energy vehicles that would ultimately complement a near-zero emission society.”
This unnamed concept will also receive a hoard of driver assistance technologies, which the Korea automaker plans to outline at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The vehicle is part of Hyundai’s plan to bring 21 eco-friendly cars to market between it and sister brand Kia by the year 2020. The next vehicle to arrive as part of that blueprint will be an EV version of the new Kona compact crossover, which is due in 2018.
