GM’s Spring Hill Plant to Gain New Cadillac Crossover, Lose Workers

General Motors plans to lay off the recently added third shift at Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee.

The downtime is scheduled to begin November 27 and GM claims the layoffs address slowing industry sales and rising inventories.

“This adjustment allows the plant to maintain stable production, protect the value of our brands in any sales environment, and to provide the smallest impact to plant employment going forward,” the company said in a statement.

According to , the layoffs are a mix of temporary workers who are being terminated and permanent workers who will be placed on indefinite leave.

GM also confirmed it will spend $294 million to upgrade the plant for production of a future Cadillac crossover. claims it will be the compact XT4, but conflicting rumors place XT4 production at GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, where it will share a line with its E2xx platform mates, the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse.
