Ford Mustang Getting Hardcore Track Performance Package to Rival Camaro 1LE

Much like the Chevrolet Camaro’s 1LE track handling package, the Ford Mustang will be getting something similar in 2018.

Both GT and EcoBoost Mustangs will be available with the optional Performance Package in either fastback or convertible body style, regardless of transmission choice.

Tick the box and you’ll gain heavy-duty front springs, improved cooling, an upgraded TORSEN rear end, plus unique chassis, ABS, traction and stability control settings. Cars with the 5.0-liter V8 also benefit from six-piston Brembo brakes, a K-brace, and an upsized rear sway bar.

Buried within the 2018 Ford Mustang’s order guide, however, is a Level 2 performance package thtat sounds vaguely similar to Chevrolet’s more hardcore, track-focused option.

The package will only be available to six-speed manual Mustang GT shoppers and, so far, all we know is Ford will ditch the car’s spare tire in the name of weight savings, along with adding a new set of wheels, which are half-inch wider both front (9.5-inch) and back (10-inch) and will probably feature even better rubber than the Performance Pack’s Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires.

It wouldn’t be surprising if there are other performance tweaks happening below the surface. For example, compared to the regular Camaro SS, the manual-only 1LE gets bigger brakes, wider wheels, an electronic limited-slip differential, slightly stiffer MagneRide settings, several additional auxiliary transmission, differential and engine coolers, new gear ratios for better acceleration on track, plus reworked performance management software.

Ford hasn’t announced a time frame for the package’s availability or reveal, but either the L.A. Auto Show in November or the 2018 Detroit Auto Show could be viable locations for the data dump.
