Eight Legendary Race Cars to Headline Mecum Monterey Auction

Mecum’s upcoming Monterey auction will see some of the world’s most rare and valuable automobiles go under the gavel – including eight legendary race cars from a variety race series and time periods.

Three of the race cars will come from the Colin Comer Collection, with the highlight being a 1958 Lister-Jaguar. Campaigned by the Briggs Cunningham race team from 1958 to 1960, it was once raced by Stirling Moss and was driven to the 1958 SCCA National Championship by Briggs Cunningham himself. Also being sold from the Comer Collection will be a 1964 Eisert Harrison Special Indy Car and a 1993 Ford Thunderbird NASCAR stock car.

Three Porsches will also find new homes at the auction, including a 1976 Porsche 934/935 IMSA. The car was raced at Le Mans in 1976 and 1977 and is expected to bring in anywhere from $800,000 to $1 million. A 1977 Porsche 934.5/935 IMSA will command a similarly steep price, with estimates placing its value at $700,000 to $1 million. Topping the Porsches in value is a 1977 Porsche 935 factory race car, which took four first place finishes in class at the Nurburgring and should nab at least $1.6 million.

Our personal favorite of the race cars on offer is a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona that placed fifth in class at the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans. Not surprisingly, it may prove to be the most valuable of the cars mentioned here, with estimates placing its value at $1.65 million on the high end. Rounding out the race car docket is a 2011 Lotus Evora GTE that contested the American Le Mans Series in the hands of Townsend Bell. It should sell for $250,000 to $300,000.
