Buick Will be at the Forefront of GM's Aggressive EV Push

Buick will be at the forefront of General Motors’ electric vehicle onslaught in the coming years.

Last month, General Motors outlined an aggressive electric and hybrid vehicle plan that will see it introduce two new electric vehicles next year and an additional 18 by 2023. At the time, GM product boss Mark Reuss was quoted in saying the automaker “believes the future is all-electric,” and added that he’s “far along in our plan to lead the way to that future world.”

Speaking to , Buick brand boss Duncan Aldred said Buick will play a “huge part,” in that EV product push. Buick is GM’s strongest brand in China, the world’s largest car market, so it’s hardly surprising to hear that some future GM EVs will have the tri-shield badge.

“We will have multiple entries in a fairly short period of time,” he said. “We’re GM’s biggest brand in the world’s biggest market. You’ll see a number of different technologies to go toward (our) zero-emissions objective.”

Buick’s strength in China will help it introduce EVs in North America. Based on Aldred’s comments, it sounds as though Buick will introduce a few different electric vehicles in China in the coming years. Those products may then make their way to North America once EVs begin to gain more traction here.

“Because we are so successful in China, it gives scale and leverage in North America,” he said. “We will have multiple (electrified) entries in China over the next few years. When, and if, the market develops (in North America) we will be in good shape.”

So while Chevy is currently the only GM brand with an EV, it won’t be long before you start to see Buick EVs around as well. There’s rumors the automaker could be set to introduce an EV crossover based on the Chevrolet Bolt’s platform in 2019, which should kickstart Buick’s foray into the emissions-free car market.
