BMW is planning a new electric vehicle, but look for it to wear a 4 Series GT badge rather than the ‘i’ from BMW’s electric sub-brand.
According to a report from , BMW will replace both the existing 3 Series Gran Turismo and 4 Series Gran Coupe models with a new 4 Series Gran Turismo within the next three years, and a new electric version is in the mix.
The new BMW 4 Series GT will be similar to the 3 Series GT and serve as a five-door hatchback model, which has admittedly been a strange offering in BMW’s lineup. says it will go on sale in the U.K. in 2020 and it will serve as a Tesla Model S fighter with an all-electric variant with a range of 311 miles (500 kilometers) and a competitive starting price (under £40,000).
The BMW 4 Series GT will initially launch with conventional gasoline powertrains, as well as a plug-in hybrid variant in 2019 before the all-electric version arrives in 2020.

The German automaker has decided instead of investing all its electrified models into the i sub-brand, it will begin offering all-electric versions of existing cars. The first car to get the treatment will be an all-electric MINI due next year. After that, an all-electric version of the third-generation X3 will be introduced in 2019, but the 4 Series GT is what BMW is betting will push its electrified sales forward.
The company is reportedly wanting to sell 100,000 electrified vehicles this year.
