BMW Flagship SUV Hits the Road for Testing

Spy photographers have caught the BMW X7 testing on roadways.

The upcoming flagship SUV is BMW’s answer to high-end Land Rover and Range Rover models, as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLS by offering seating for seven and plenty of cargo space. It is expected to ride on a stretched version of the automaker’s CLAR platform that also underpins the new BMW X5. The platform is currently used on the new 5 and 7 Series models and will also be used on the next 3 Series that has also been spied testing.

Under the hood of the BMW X7 will likely lurk six- and eight-cylinder engines with both gasoline and diesel variants offered. Rumor has it that a plug-in variant will join the lineup and it’s unclear whether BMW will offer a high-performance V12 version.

As expected, the prototype is still wearing a lot of camouflage, but you can see the traditional BMW kidney grilles being used up front, although they’re much bigger than normal. Production on the BMW X7 will be at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina and it should roll out in 2018 as a 2019 model.
