Audi Sport CEO Hints at Rear-Wheel-Drive Cars in the Future

Four driven wheels may not be a requirement of Audi Sport cars in the future, according to new comments made by the brand’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann.

The latest revelation came today at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as Winkelmann was speaking to the U.K.’s .

“I can imagine we can also have cars with rear-wheel drive or two-wheel drive in the future,” he told the publication, adding that “Quattro can be a company, but it can also be an option.”

That helps to clarify comments he made in an article from published earlier this week.

Discussing the renaming of the brand — going from Quattro GmbH to Audi Sport — Winkelmann said, “I think AWD is one of our USPs, but it doesn’t have to be everywhere.”

In that article, he said that the brand was already working on an RWD R8, but added that the brand “must” offer AWD.

Many Audi race cars – the RS3 LMS, the RS5 DTM, and R8 GT4 – are already two-wheel drive, so it’s not crazy. All the brand needs to do is add some comfy seats.

“Our cars will remain distinguished, but never pimped,” he told . “We’ll always offer high performance, but at the same time our cars must be comfortable – and give you a feeling that you are better than you expect.”

It seems, therefore, that the rebranding of the company — going from Quattro GmbH to Audi Sport — was more than just a name change, carrying with it some technical ramifications.

Winkelmann also revealed that Audi Sport would be working on electric RS models, and would be revealing two new Audi Sport models at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September.
