Stylish Concept Previews Future Electric MINI Model

MINI has unveiled a concept car to preview a production model that will launch in 2019.

Called the MINI Electric Concept, the stylish EV will make its public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Although the British automaker isn’t sharing specifics on the powertrain just yet, it is pure electric and will feature a single electric motor powering the compact model. The concept builds off the existing MINI two-door hatchback, with its hexagonal radiator grille and circular headlights making it instantly recognizable. But like other automakers that use stylish color cues to suggest a vehicle is electrified, the MINI Electric Concept features bright yellow accents, reminiscent of the MINI E, the company’s first entry in the EV market.

To enhance aerodynamics, the radiator grille is closed, while a Striking Yellow accent bar on the grille along with an E badge in the same shade gives a contrasting effect on the body. Further improving aerodynamics are add-on parts on the front apron, while the simulated “air intakes” have also been sealed. The rest of the body has been painted Reflection Silver, a matte liquid metal color shade.

MINI also turned to 3D printing for certain components on the concept, with the aerodynamic inlays on the wheels and the recessed surfaces in the simulated air intakes all being 3D printed. The aerodynamic styling continues to the rear of the MINI Electric Concept with air deflectors and a fiberglass diffuser. Like the front, there’s a yellow accent strip providing contrast to the rear and the lack of exhaust pipes reinforces its all-electric powertrain.

Check back in a couple weeks when the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show opens its doors to the media, where  will be reporting live and we will be sure to get an up close look at the MINI Electric Concept.

“With its characteristic go-kart feeling and powerful electric motor, the MINI Electric Concept is great fun to drive while also being completely suitable for everyday use – and producing zero emissions to boot. That’s how we at MINI envisage electric mobility in tomorrow’s world,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad.
