Spy photographers have caught the next-generation Toyota Corolla testing on public roadways for the very first time.
Expected to arrive as a 2020 model year, the new Corolla rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that currently underpins the Prius, Camry, and C-HR models. Styling for the new Corolla should resemble other recent Toyota models, meaning a more aggressive front end is likely. The overall size of the Corolla shouldn’t change all that much.
The interior however, will likely receive more significant changes to address shortcomings of the current model. New controls along with a larger, more prominent screen will join new materials and some driver-assistance features. Keep in mind it is a Corolla after all, and Toyota will want to keep costs down to remain competitive within the segment.

Under the hood, power should still come from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, but a new CVT could be used to provide an improved ratio spread. Other markets will receive a hybrid variant of the new Corolla.
The next Toyota Corolla will be built in a new joint manufacturing facility with Mazda, which was recently announced by both Japanese automakers.
