BMW is no longer using a mule to test its next-generation X5 SUV.
Although it’s heavily camouflaged, the 2018 BMW X5 is testing its production body, which reveals larger kidney grilles up front as well as a more pronounced fascia, giving the SUV a more dynamic look. Riding on the SUV version of BMW’s CLAR modular platform that debuted on the new 7 Series sedan, the X5 is expected to grow in size compared to the current model, offering more space for passengers and cargo.
The new platform takes advantage of lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber. Rumor has it the new X5 will shed around 550 to 660 pounds off its weight compared to the current model.

As for powerplants, those will likely come from the current 5 and 7 Series models, so expect a wide range of gasoline and diesel offerings for the worldwide market. There will also be a plug-in hybrid varaint added to the lineup after its debut, as well as the high-performance X5 M model.
