2018 BMW X5 Loses More Camo as Official Debut Nears

The 2018 BMW X5 is poised to make its official debut shortly, with the mid-size crossover having recently been spotted wearing less camouflage than ever before.

These spy shots show the all-new X5 wearing its production headlights, which unsurprisingly look like those seen on prototypes for the upcoming X7, along with other production cues such as the taillights and exhaust tips. BMW’s SUVs will also receive a new version of the automaker’s dual kidney grille, with both the X5 and X7 having been spotted with a taller, more pronounced version of it.

The X5 will ride on the same CLAR platform (cluster architecture) that will underpin the X7 and will be built alongside the full-size SUV at BMW’s Spartanburg, North Carolina plant. A choice of four, six and eight-cylinder engines should be on offer and like many new SUVs, a plug-in hybrid should be offered. The hot X5 M will return with the introduction of this new model as well.

The all-new X5 should debut sometime later this year, or perhaps early next year at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. No matter where it’s first shown, you can expect it to go on sale sometime next year. It’s one in a number of new BMW SUVs on the horizon, with the German brand preparing to launch both the X2 and the previously mentioned X7 shortly.
