The 2018 BMW M5 has been spied testing once again, showing us what its new face will look like.
Unlike in previous spy photos, there is no more thick camouflage hiding the front end of the car anymore, allowing us to see the design of the front bumper. While details aren’t offered, plenty of tweaks were likely made up front to help this car squeeze more power from its engine.
A new 4.4-liter V8 packing two turbochargers will provide motivation for the new M5, sending over 600 horsepower to the rear wheels. An eight-speed ZF transmissions is expected to be hooked to the engine, while for the first time, an xDrive all-wheel drive system is being added as an option for the M5.
Considering that the new M550i will make the run to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the upcoming M5 could make the jump in around three seconds flat.

Weight loss is part of the recipe for the new M5, and thanks to the new modular CLAR platform, the car will probably drop a few hundred pounds. For comparison, the standard 5-Series managed to shave 220 pounds off its curb weight thanks to the platform.
The move to optional all-wheel drive is certainly a change for the M5, but for those who think it is sacrilegious, BMW will reportedly offer the choice to send 100 percent of the car’s power to the rear wheels, even when the xDrive is fitted.
The next-generation M5 will be a 2018 model and is expected to debut sometime in the second half of 2017.
