This Electric Boat is Powered by BMW i3 Batteries

The BMW i3’s batteries are being used in a boat’s propulsion system.

 

BMW has announced it is supplying lithium-ion batteries to German company Torqeedo, with the marine drive system manufacturer using them for energy storage in its high-performance Deep Blue electric drive system. The high-voltage batteries used in the BMW i3 features eight modules, each containing 12 cells and was developed in-house by the BMW Group. The designers intended for plug-and-play capability from the outset, making it easy for a company like Torqeedo to utilize the batteries.

Torqeedo is combining the battery pack with its most powerful range of motors for inboard and outboard applications and hybrid systems with up to 160 horsepower. The company was founded in 2005 in Starnberg, Germany and is considered a leading provider of electric and hybrid propulsion systems for motorboats used in sailing yachts and commercial marine applications like ferries and water taxis.
