Both of these sedans have their plusses and tradeoffs but only one can reign supreme! Which one will get more votes? Let’s break it down …
Starting with Hyundai’s offering, the South Korean automaker’s premium four-door features a 3.3-liter V6 engine that’s good for 293 ponies and 255 lb-ft of torque. Direct fuel injection and fully variable valve timing help bolster those figures and allow it to deliver a class-leading 88.8 horsepower per liter.
That Lambda-family V6 is matched to a smooth and responsive six-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox helps the Azera deliver 20 miles per gallon in city driving and 29 on the highway, figures that result in a combined rating of 23 MPG.
Shifting gears, Buick’s LaCrosse is in its final months, about to be replaced by an all-new model. But even in old age it still proves to be more than a match to Hyundai’s upscale sedan offering.
The car’s base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but the more exciting offering is a 3.6-liter V6. Aside from the smoothness of half-a-dozen cylinders, this propulsion unit is good for 304 SAE-certified horses and 264 lb-ft of torque. As in the Hyundai, a six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered in this Buick.
As for consumption, the LaCrosse is fairly efficient. In front-wheel-drive guise it’s good for 18 miles per gallon around town and 28 on the highway. Naturally, all-wheel drive cuts into both of those figures slightly.
