Which of these high-performance cars would YOU rather own?
At first glance, they’re not exactly ideal rivals, seeing that the AMG is, you know, nearly twice as expensive as the blue-collar Chevy. Still, the bow-tie coupe in this tossup gives its German rival a run for its proverbial money.
The ZL1 is motivated by a supercharged LT4 small block V8. Displacing a generous 6.2-liters, it delivers 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Those goods are sent to the rear tires through either a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox or a 10-speed automatic.
Clocking in at 3,800 pounds and change, this alpha-dog Camaro can reach mile-a-minute speed in just 3.5 seconds and can eradicate that velocity in as little as 107 feet. The quarter-mile can be yours in just 11.4 seconds at 127 miles an hour. Talk about fast!
In base form, the Mercedes-AMG GT features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that’s good for 456 horses and 443 torques. Hand assembled, this high-tech engine is matched to an advanced seven-ratio, dual-clutch automatic transmission.
This drivetrain combination yields 60 miles an hour in 3.9 seconds, with terminal velocity clocking in at 189 miles an hour. But of course, if you want more, Stuttgart offers several versions of this car that are even more muscular. The R version cranks out 577 horsepower from the same displacement, enough to match the ZL1’s sprint time.
The Camaro may offer bone-crushing performance, but it’s not as civilized as its old-world rival. The interior is a little on the cheap side and its sightlines are disastrous. In comparison, the Mercedes is far more luxurious inside and arguably more attractive on the outside, but is that worth the extra cost?
