Ferrari and Lamborghini have sworn they have no plans to make an electric car, but we’re not sure if we believe them.
According to , both Ferrari and Lamborghini have confirmed neither have plans to develop a fully electric model anytime soon. Speaking at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, Ferrari’s chief technology officer, Michael Leiters, says he cannot imagine a full-electric Ferrari model given the limitations of the technology right now. “There is a need for more time, more innovation to get the same performance, and, what’s even more challenging, to get the same driving pleasure that we have today,” Leiters told reporters. “Just think of the sound and things like that which are essential for us. For us the first step is hybridization.”

Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali didn’t stray from Leiters’ statement: “I don’t see electric to be an immediate development in the super sports car segment, but hybridization for sure will come, in the next five years for sure,” said Domenicali.
Although it makes sense for brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini to shy away from all-electric vehicles, it’s hard to argue that the technology isn’t ready yet. There are quite a few electric hypercars already, albeit concepts or low-production models, that have impressed with fully electric powertrains. The problem is, Ferrari and Lamborghini have built their reputation on a certain “driving experience,” and part of that is the exotic sounding engines powering the machines.
