An all-electric BMW 3 Series could arrive as soon as this fall.
The news comes just months after BMW CEO Harald Krueger announced that the company would be making a push toward more electrification and connected features.
The 3 series is one of the company’s most popular models, so it makes sense that it would electrify that model sooner rather than later. What we didn’t expect was for an electric 3 to arrive so soon. German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that company sources told it that the electric 3 will arrive at the Munich auto show this September. The report claims a range of “of at least 248 miles (400 km).” The compact sized BMW would be a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model 3 sedan, which is also expected to arrive – in production form – this September.

While BMW already has the plug-in hybrid i8 supercar, and the compact i3 is available as a pure EV, the new 3 might not be the first mainstream EV that the company puts into production. Last fall, BMW announced that it was planning to make fully electric versions of the X3 crossover as well as at least one Mini model. Those models are expected to go into production in 2019. BMW currently offers plug-in versions of the 3, 5, and 7 series, as well as its X5 SUV.
